(1839–76)
a US general who first became famous for his wild courage fighting for the Union during the American Civil War . He was proud of his appearance and his long fair hair. From 1868, he fought the Cheyenne and the Sioux , until he and all his soldiers were killed by them at the Battle of Little Bighorn . This battle is sometimes called Custer’s last stand .
