I . ‘Dizzy’ Dean

( Jay Hanna Dean 1911–74 )

a famous US baseball pitcher (= player who throws the ball to be hit). He was chosen for the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1953. His best years (1930–37) were with the St Louis Cardinals. He was named the Most Valuable Player in 1934.

III . James Dean

(1931–55)

a US actor who has come to represent the popular image of a young person resisting authority. He appeared in only three films, East of Eden (1955), Rebel Without a Cause (1955) and Giant (1956), before being killed in a car accident when Giant was almost finished. Posters of him are still popular, especially with young people.
