(1911–74) a US ↑ baseball player who was a famous ↑ pitcher for the St Louis Cardinals team in the 1930s, helping them win the ↑ World Series in 1934. He was famous for achieving more ↑ strikeout s than any other pitcher.

II. Dean, How ‧ ard /ˈhaʊəd $ -ərd/ BrE AmE

(1948–) a ↑ governor of the US state of Vermont, who tried to become the Democratic Party ↑ candidate for president in 2004. He strongly criticized the war in Iraq and had many supporters, but he was not chosen to be the candidate. He was one of the first politicians to use the Internet to gain supporters.

III. Dean, James BrE AmE

(1931–55) a US film actor who became extremely famous, and then died in a car crash at the age of 24. After his death he became even more popular, and he is still thought of, especially by young people, as a typical example of a young ↑ rebel (=someone who refuses to do follow social rules or behave in the way that other people want them to) . His films include East of Eden (1955) and Rebel Without a Cause (1955).
