I . Emmett Kelly

(1898–1979)

the best-known US clown (= a person with comic clothes and a painted face who does funny things). Kelly became famous as the character Weary Willie with the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circuses (1942–56). Willie’s face was very sad, and everything seemed to defeat him.

II . Gene Kelly

(1912–96)

a US film actor, dancer and singer. He became a star in the Broadway musical show Pal Joey (1940). His film successes included On the Town (1949), An American in Paris (1951) and Singin’ in the Rain . Kelly later directed films, including Hello, Dolly! (1969). He received a special Oscar in 1951.

III . Grace Kelly

(1928–82)

a US film star from a rich Irish-American family in Philadelphia who became Princess Grace of Monaco whe she married in 1956. She received an Oscar for The Country Girl (1954), and her other films included High Noon , Rear Window (1954) and High Society (1956).
