a US holiday to honour Americans killed in all wars. It is the last Monday in May, but a few states have it on 30 May. It began in the South during the Civil War when flowers were placed on graves, and the North first celebrated it in 1868. Memorial Day traditionally begins the summer holiday from school. Southern states also celebrate Confederate Memorial Day on 26 April, 10 May or 3 June.
