an English conductor. He joined the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra in 1980 and became well known for conducting both modern and traditional classical music. He has been a conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. He became Chief Conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in 2002. He was made a knight in 1994.
