an English scientist. He is the first scientist to have received two Nobel Prizes for chemistry (in 1956 and 1980), and his work has been important for the development of genetic engineering (= the deliberate changing of small parts of the cells of plants or animals in order to change the way they grow). He became a member of the Order of Merit in 1986.
