TICKER-TAPE PARADE

Meaning of TICKER-TAPE PARADE in English

n

a traditional parade in US cities, especially New York, during which people throw many small bits of paper from the tall buildings onto the parade as it passes in the street. Such parades are held to honour famous people, such as Charles Lindbergh after his famous flight. Ticker tape is paper in a thin strip from a machine used for receiving and recording telegraph messages, but the paper used in ticker-tape parades today is usually confetti (= tiny pieces of coloured paper traditionally thrown at weddings).
