Located in the Arctic Ocean between Cornwallis and Melville island s, it is 160 mi (260 km) long and 50100 mi (80160 km) wide. The coastline is fringed with inlets, and several islands stretch from its western tip. Discovered in 1819 by Sir William Parry, it was named for the earl of Bathurst. The northern magnetic pole lies off the island's northern coast.
