Seaport (pop., 1999 est.: 274,000), capital of Guinea-Bissau.

Lying on an estuary of the Gêba River where it flows into the Atlantic Ocean, the port originated in 1687 as a Portuguese fortified post. In 1941 it replaced Bolama as the country's capital and has since developed as an excellent roadstead for large vessels.
