English historian whose career was dedicated to the study of the English Civil Wars .
He taught at King's College, London, and was a fellow at Oxford. His researches among manuscript collections gave unrivaled authority to his monumental undertaking. Its principal volumes were History of England from the Accession of James I to the Outbreak of the Civil War, 16031642 (188384); History of the Great Civil War, 16421649 (1886, 1893); and History of the Commonwealth and Protectorate, 16491660 (1903).
