The son of Tomá 0161; Masaryk , he entered the foreign service of the newly independent Czechoslovakia in 1919 and served as ambassador to Britain from 1925 to 1938. During World War II he was foreign minister of the Czechoslovak provisional government in London (194045) and later Prague (194548). At the request of Pres. Edvard Bene 0161; , he remained at his post after the communist takeover in 1948. Two weeks later he either jumped or was pushed to his death from a window in the foreign office.
