Prestigious U.S. department-store chain.
It was founded in Dallas, Texas, in 1907 by Herbert Marcus, his sister Carrie Marcus Neiman, and her husband, A.L. Neiman. From the beginning it featured unusual merchandise, particularly extravagant and outlandish gifts (including camels and Chinese junks) intended to appeal to the rich, in addition to a more standard selection for moderate-income customers. In 1999 Neiman Marcus Group, which included Neiman Marcus and the retailer Bergdorf Goodman, became a publicly held company.
