Town (pop., 1999 est.: 36,360), capital, and chief port of Tonga.
Located on the northern shore of Tongatapu Island in the southern Pacific Ocean, it has a deep-draft harbour that is protected by reefs. Commercial activities centre on the export of copra and bananas. Landmarks include the 19th-century royal palace, a chapel, and royal tombs.
