U.S. actor.

The descendant of a long line of actors, he toured with a Shakespearean repertory company before making his Broadway debut in Romeo and Juliet (1935). His first film hit was Lloyds of London (1936). He became noted for his action-adventure roles in movies such as The Rains Came (1939), The Mark of Zorro (1940), Blood and Sand (1941), Nightmare Alley (1947), and The Mississippi Gambler (1953), while continuing to act on stage in plays such as Saint Joan (1936), Mister Roberts (1950), and Back to Methuselah (1958).
