Belgian-born U.S. metallurgist.
He immigrated to the U.S. in 1887 and taught at Harvard University (18991939). His microscopic and photomicroscopic studies of metal structures make him one of the founders of physical metallurgy . His work in heat-treating of metals is regarded as a scientific landmark. He wrote the influential treatise Metallography and Heat Treatment of Iron and Steel (1912).
