Meaning of BUGINESE in English

Culturally dominant ethnic group of Celebes (Sulawesi), Indonesia.

Their trading-port city Macassar (modern Ujung Pandang ) fell to the Dutch in 1667, and they emigrated to other parts of the Malay Peninsula, establishing Buginese states in Selangor and Riau. They continued to harry the Dutch and also fought with the Malay s. Their conflicts with the latter cost them their supremacy in the region by 1800. Early converts to Buddhism, the Buginese were converted to Islam in the 17th century. Today they number about 3.3 million. Their village economy is based on rice cultivation and some trade between islands.
