in 1996. Its principal subsidiary was Chemical Bank, which was chartered in 1824 as a division of a New York chemical manufacturing company. The 1996 merger made the resulting firm (the Chase Manhattan Corp.) briefly the largest bank in the U.S. Another merger in 2000 created J.P. Morgan Chase & Co.
