Largest U.S. producer of canned fruits and vegetables.
Formed in 1899 as the California Fruit Canners Association, it began marketing a line of canned goods under the Del Monte brand (the name of a luxurious hotel in Monterey, Calif.) in 1916. It is a major grower and distributor of pineapples and other produce, and it owns numerous diverse subsidiaries.
