Intel was founded in 1968 as NM Electronics by IBM chose to use Intel's 8088 microprocessor (introduced 1978) in its first {{link=personal computer">personal computer (the IBM PC), and Intel microprocessors became standard for all PC-type machines. Although other manufacturers eventually developed Intel-compatible microprocessors, Intel continued to power more than 75% of PCs at the beginning of the 21st century.
