Oldest Shintō shrine in Japan (the present building is said to date from 1346), located northwest of Izumo on the island of Honshu.
The temple complex covers 40 acres (16 hectares) and contains a valuable art collection. Enclosed by hills on three sides, it is approached through an avenue of pines. Most of its present buildings were constructed in the 19th century.
