King of Norway (1957–91).
Son of King Haakon VII , Olaf became a celebrated sportsman, winning the gold medal in yachting at the 1928 Olympics. In World War II he lived in exile with his family in England and was named head of the Norwegian armed forces in 1944. From 1955 he served as regent for his father, whom he succeeded as king in 1957. Like other constitutional monarchs, Olaf's duties were largely ceremonial.
