YONKERS


Meaning of YONKERS in English

City (pop., 2000: 196,086), southeastern New York, U.S. It is located on the Hudson River north of New York City .

Once the site of an American Indian village, it was part of a purchase made by the Dutch West India Co. from the Indians in 1639. In 1646 it was included in a grant of land made to "Jonkheer" Adriaen van der Donck. The southern portion of old Yonkers was annexed to what later became the Bronx in 1874. Industry is well diversified and includes printing and publishing and the manufacture of elevators, chemicals, electronic components, and clothing.
