AKERSHUS

Meaning of AKERSHUS in English

fylke (county), southeastern Norway. Covering 1,898 square miles (4,917 square km), it extends north from Oslo Fjord to the southern end of Lake Mjsa and east to the Swedish frontier. The Vorma River flows through Akershus from Mjsa into the Glomma (Glma) River and on to Lake yeren. The national capital, Oslo, is the county seat, though it is a separate fylke and bykommune (urban commune) and thus lies outside the boundaries of Akershus. Embracing numerous suburbs of Oslo, Akershus is one of the most densely populated areas of Norway. It contains the historic village of Eidsvoll, 30 miles (48 km) north of Oslo, in which the National Assembly voted Norway's constitution in 1814. Between Eidsvoll and Oslo is Gardermoen international airport. Shipping, manufacturing, and tourism are the economic mainstays of the county. Pop. (1997 est.) 446,385.
