Meaning of AKUREYRI in English

town, northern Iceland. It lies at the southern end of Eyja Fjord. Akureyri is the chief centre of the north and is one of the island's most populous urban centres outside the Reykjavk metropolitan area. While primarily a commercial and distributing centre, Akureyri is also a fishing port, agricultural market, and manufacturing centre for woolen goods, fish oil, shoes, and fish and dairy products. Ironworking, woodworking, and shipbuilding are all significant industries. The town has a technical college, an agricultural experimental station, an airport, botanical gardens, and several museums. Inc. 1876. Pop. (1993 est.) 14,799.
