Akureyri is the chief centre of the north and is one of the island's most populous urban centres outside the Reykjavk metropolitan area. While primarily a commercial and distributing centre, Akureyri is also a fishing port, agricultural market, and manufacturing centre for woolen goods, fish oil, shoes, and fish and dairy products. Ironworking, woodworking, and shipbuilding are all significant industries. The town has a technical college, an agricultural experimental station, an airport, botanical gardens, and several museums. Inc. 1876. Pop. (1993 est.) 14,799.
