private, coeducational institution of higher learning located in Albion, Mich., U.S. Albion is a liberal arts college offering bachelor's degrees in the humanities, business, social sciences, natural sciences, and the fine arts. The college is affiliated with the United Methodist Church. It provides study-abroad programs in Europe, Mexico, and Israel. Total enrollment is about 1,600. Chartered in 1835, the college was founded to educate the region's settlers and Indians. The Albion Female Collegiate Institute, opened in 1950, merged with Albion College in 1857. In 1940 Albion became the first private college in Michigan to be awarded a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. The Carl A. Gerstacker Liberal Arts Program in Professional Management and the Gerald R. Ford Institute of Public Service offer students the opportunity to combine a liberal arts education with internships in the business and public-service sectors.
