ALGEBRAIC NUMBER

real number for which there exists a polynomial equation with natural numbers or their negatives as coefficients such that the given real number is a solution. Examples of algebraic numbers are all natural numbers, all rational numbers, and some but not all irrational numbers. Numbers such as that symbolized by the Greek letter pi, p, which are not algebraic, are called transcendental numbers.
