born Nov. 15, 1885, Jamesport, Mo., U.S. died Sept. 16, 1974, Lawrence, Kan. byname of Forrest Clare Allen American college basketball coach who was instrumental in making basketball an Olympic sport. Allen succeeded James Naismith, who created the sport, as basketball coach in 190809 at the University of Kansas, Lawrence. Allen's Kansas teams of 192056 won 771 games and lost 233; his 195152 Kansas team won the championship of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. His teams won 24 Big Eight Conference championships in his coaching career. In 1936 he secured the addition of basketball to the Olympic Games program, and in 1952 he coached the American team that won the Olympic gold medal in Helsinki.
