born April 22, 1518 died Nov. 17, 1562, Andelys, Fr. also called Anthony Of Navarre, French Antoine De Bourbon, or De Navarre, Spanish Antonio De Borbn, or De Navarra king of Navarre, duke of Vendme, and father of Henry IV of France. Son of Charles of Bourbon, duke of Vendme, he married (1548) Jeanne d'Albret, daughter of Henry II, king of Navarre; as sole heir, she brought her husband the title of king of Navarre. Anthony was involved with his brother, Louis I de Bourbon, prince de Cond, in the Huguenot conspiracy of Amboise, but, nevertheless, he survived to be later named lieutenant general of the French armies (1560), having turned Roman Catholic. He commanded the army that besieged Rouen and there received a mortal wound.
