ASHFIELD


Meaning of ASHFIELD in English

district, administrative and historic county of Nottinghamshire, England. The name is ancient and appeared in the names of the two major towns within the district even before its formation. The two towns are the coal-mining centres of Kirkby-in-Ashfield and Sutton-in-Ashfield, forming, as does the whole district, part of the heavily industrialized western rim of the county, where it borders on Derbyshire. Area 42 square miles (109 square km). Pop. (1998 est.) 107,900.
