AUMERLE, EDWARD PLANTAGENET, DUKE OF

Meaning of AUMERLE, EDWARD PLANTAGENET, DUKE OF in English

son of the duke of York in Shakespeare's Richard II. He reappears as the duke of York in Henry V. Aumerle remains loyal to Richard even after his father, Edmund of Langley, duke of York, abandons the king for Henry Bolingbroke (later Henry IV). Although accused of murder and treason, a repentant Aumerle is pardoned through the intercession of his mother with Henry. Thereafter Aumerle, who succeeds his father as duke, holds faith with the rightful king, whoever he may be; he dies bravely in the Battle of Agincourt in Henry V.
