Meaning of BACS-KISKUN in English

megye (county), south-central Hungary. The country's largest megye, it has an area of 3,229 square miles (8,362 square km) and extends eastward from the Danube River to the Tisza. Wheat, corn (maize), and vegetables are grown throughout the county, and in the northeast, around Kecskemt (q.v.; the megye seat), fruits (peaches, cherries, grapes, apricots) are grown. Major towns, apart from Kecskemt, are Baja, Kiskunhalas, and Kiskunflegyhza. The latter has a large factory producing mining machinery. Tass, in the northwestern corner of the megye, is a centre for fishing and aquatic sports on the Danube; the town of Kalocsa is known for its traditional folk art and culture. Pop. (1996 est.) 540,000.
