BAJA

town, Bcs-Kiskun megye (county), south-central Hungary. It lies east of the Danube mainstream, on the banks of the Kamars-Danube (known locally as Sugovica). It is a river port and boating centre and has some industry (farm machinery, furniture, and chemicals); it is an important market centre for agricultural produce and livestock. Road and rail lines cross the Danube west of the town. Baja has several Baroque churches, and Bke (Peace) Square is lined with old houses. There is a Serbian minority in the population. Pop. (1990 prelim.) 38,692.
