Meaning of BISBEE in English

city, seat of Cochise county, southeastern Arizona, U.S., 8 miles (13 km) north of the Mexican border. It is built on steep canyon slopes (east of the Mule Mountains) and was for many years a major copper-producing centre. It began as a prospectors' camp after the discovery of copper in 1877 and was named for Judge DeWitt Bisbee, part owner of the Copper Queen Mine. During World War I, more than 1,000 striking miners were forcibly transported to Columbus, N.M. (the Bisbee Deportation, 1917). The Lavender Open-pit Mine stopped production in 1975 and has since been a tourist attraction. Tombstone city, the Coronado National Memorial, and segments of the Coronado National Forest are nearby. Inc. 1900. Pop. (1990) 6,288.
