BLANC, LOUIS

born Oct. 29, 1811, Madrid, Spain died Dec. 6, 1882, Cannes, Fr. in full Jean-josephcharles-louis Blanc French utopian socialist, noted for his theory of worker-controlled social workshops. (184144; The History of Ten Years, 18301840, 2 vol., 184445, reprinted 1969), an attack on the government and person of King Louis-Philippe; and Histoire de la Rvolution franaise, 12 vol. (184762), a political, economic, and social interpretation. Leo A. Loubre, Louis Blanc: His Life and His Contribution to French Jacobin-Socialism (1961, reprinted 1980), is a good study combining the biography with a history of socialism in France.
