(genus Bouvardia), any of about 30 species of evergreen shrubs or herbs of the madder family (Rubiaceae), mostly natives of tropical America. Some species are forced in greenhouses. The large, showy flowers are usually red, white, or yellow. They are sold by florists in colder climates.
