in full Castleton of Braemar village, on the Clunie Water (stream) at its confluence with the River Dee, that is the centre of the picturesque mountainous region of Braemar in the council area and historic county of Aberdeenshire, Scotland. The Jacobite Fifteen Rebellion of 1715 began in Braemar. The village is now a popular tourist resort and the focus of the Deeside Highlands, an area of royal deer forests, castles, and mansions, including the British royal residence of Balmoral Castle. The Royal Braemar Gathering (Highland Games), a national folk athletic contest, takes place annually in September. Pop. (1981) 966.
