city, Cadiz provincia, in the comunidad autnoma ("autonomous community") of Andalusia, southwestern Spain. The city is an agricultural centre and summer resort near the Atlantic coast (Gulf of Cadiz) and is surrounded by vineyards and pine groves. Salt processing is a leading industry. The city was founded in 1303 by Alonso Prez de Guzmn, warrior captain of Ferdinand IV of Castile. In the municipality are Barrosa, where Anglo-Spanish forces won an indecisive victory over the French during the Peninsular War (March 5, 1811), and Sancti Petri, where there are ruins of an ancient temple of Hercules. Pop. (1981) 36,203; (1991 prelim.) 44,620.
