city, seat of Chilton county, central Alabama, U.S., near the Coosa River. Named for James H. Clanton, a Confederate general in the U.S. Civil War, it lies in a fertile agricultural area and developed as a shipping point for fruit (peaches) and vegetables; there is some light industry. Clanton is a base for fishermen on the Coosa River and on lakes created by the Lay and Mitchell dams. Inc. 1873. Pop. (1990) 7,669.
