private, coeducational institution of higher learning in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, U.S. Though it is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA), it is ecumenical in practice and outlook. Coe College offers an undergraduate curriculum in the liberal arts. It also offers cooperative programs in engineering and architecture with Washington University in St. Louis, Mo., and in social service administration with the University of Chicago. Total enrollment is approximately 1,300. The college was established in 1851; it was founded by a minister, Williston Jones, and classes were conducted in his home. In 1866 the school was renamed Parsons Seminary, and in 1881 it became Coe College. The college absorbed Leander Clark College in 1919. Campus facilities include an ornithological museum and a planetarium.
