DACIER, ANDR

born April 6, 1651, Castres, France died Sept. 18, 1722, Paris classical scholar and translator who with his wife, Anne Dacier, was responsible for some of the famous Delphin series of editions of Latin classics. Dacier studied at Saumur with the Humanist Tanneguy Lefbvre, whose daughter Anne he married in 1683. He was made keeper of the library of the Louvre and, elected to the French Academy in 1695, became its permanent secretary in 1713. His pedantic, somewhat uninspired works include translations of Horace, Aristotle's Poetics, Plato's Dialogues, Sophocles' Oedipus and Electra, and Plutarch's Lives. For the Delphin series, he translated Festus and Flaccus.
