English Great Alsace Canal waterway along the Rhine River, in eastern France, begun in 1932 and completed after World War II. The canal is 30 miles (50 km) long and runs between Basel, Switz., and Breisach, Ger. It was built to improve navigation of the Rhine (hindered by a rapid current) and thus increase traffic upstream from Strasbourg. Electricity is generated through locks and weirs.
