born June 19, 1903, Dover, Kent, Eng. died July 1, 1965, Durban, South Africa English cricketer and former team captain (193946) who broke many records during his career as one of the country's finest batsmen. He made his first appearance for Gloucestershire in 1920 and joined the English national team three years later. He scored 7,249 runs and took 101 catches in Test (international) competition, which were records at the time. His 10 catches in a game in 1928 and his 78 catches for that season are world records. After his retirement in 1947, Hammond moved to South Africa.
