village, in the town (township) of Urbana, Steuben county, southern New York, U.S. It lies at the south end of Keuka Lake (one of the Finger Lakes), 20 miles (32 km) north-northwest of Corning. In 1829 a local resident, William Bostwick, planted the first grapevine in the area, which was settled by French winegrowers in the 1860s. Incorporated in 1871, Hammondsport is the centre of the New York wine (particularly champagne) industry. The Greyton H. Taylor Wine Museum exhibits early phases of wine production, including barrel making. Tourism is also important to the local economy. Glenn Curtiss, the pioneer aviator and inventor, was born in Hammondsport, where in 1902 he established a motorcycle factory. At nearby Stony Brook Farm, with the help of the inventor Alexander Graham Bell and others, Curtiss conducted his early experiments in flyingincluding the flight of the June Bug on July 4, 1908, which won the Scientific American silver trophy for the first U.S. powered flight of 0.6 mile (1 km). The Glenn H. Curtiss Museum contains memorabilia and displays on the history of aviation. Pop. (1990) 929; (1998 est.) 855.
