state university system consisting of the University of Hawaii at Manoa (main campus) in Honolulu, the University of HawaiiWest Oahu in Pearl City, the University of Hawaii at Hilo in Hilo, and seven community colleges on the islands of Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and Hawaii. The main campus at Manoa is a comprehensive, land-grant university offering a wide range of undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The campus is also home to a law school and the John A. Burns School of Medicine. The university system facilities include the Center for Study of Active Volcanos and the Kalakaua Marine Education Center in Hilo, and the Pacific Biomedical Research Center and the Hawaii Institute of Geophysics in Honolulu. Total enrollment at the Manoa campus exceeds 16,000. The University of Hawaii opened in 1907 in temporary quarters in downtown Honolulu. It was then known as the College of Hawaii and offered instruction in agriculture and the mechanic arts. The college moved to the Manoa valley in 1912. In 1920, with the addition of a college of arts and sciences, it was elevated to university status. The Hilo campus was founded in 1970, the West Oahu campus in 1976.
