officially Heidenheim an der Brenz city, Baden-Wrttemberg Land (state), southwestern Germany, on the Brenz River in the eastern Swabian Alps. The site of a Roman settlement, it was chartered in 1356. It is overlooked by the ruined castle of Hellenstein (with a museum) standing on a hill (1,985 feet ). Since 1723 it has held traditional shepherds' competitions. Precision instruments, tools, machinery, textiles, and cement are manufactured. Pop. (1989 est.) 48,497.
