queen of the Amazons who is betrothed to Theseus, the duke of Athens, in Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. The marriage of Hippolyta and Theseus, former enemies in war, provides both the framework for the interconnected love stories of the play and a standard of mature love against which the behaviour of the other lovers can be measured.
