HOTTA MASATOSHI

Meaning of HOTTA MASATOSHI in English

born 1634, Edo [now Tokyo], Japan died Oct. 7, 1684, Edo statesman who began his career as an adviser to the fourth Tokugawa shogun of Japan, Ietsuna (shogun 165180), when he was still heir apparent. After Ietsuna became shogun, Hotta was made one of his top officials and did much to reorganize and reconsolidate the Tokugawa administration. Following Ietsuna's death in 1680, Hotta single-handedly blocked the attempts of another official to have a prince of the royal blood named shogun, which would have transferred the office out of the Tokugawa family and totally altered the structure of the Japanese government. Instead, he had Ietsuna's brother Tsunayoshi named to the throne, and Tsunayoshi immediately returned the favour by appointing Hotta to the position of tairo (chief councillor). Before he could enact any great changes, however, Hotta was assassinated by an envious cousin.
