HUN

Meaning of HUN in English

in Chinese Taoism, the heavenly (superior, spiritual) soul of man, as distinguished from p'o, the earthly (inferior, material) soul. Following the cosmological principles of yinyang, the union of which opposites is said to explain all reality, the Chinese attributed breathing and superior functions to the hun (yang) soul. Separation of the two souls brings death. If prescribed burial rituals and sacrifices are then properly observed, the hun soul will send blessings to the bereaved family from its abode in heaven.
