city, western Minas Gerais estado (state), Brazil. It lies at 1,981 feet (604 m) above sea level, in the highlands between the Tijuco and da Prata rivers. It was made the seat of a municipality in 1901. Ituiutaba is the commercial centre for the surrounding agricultural and pastoral region and processes local crops (rice, corn , cotton, cassava, oranges), cottonseed oil, and livestock products. The city is accessible by highway and air from Belo Horizonte, the state capital, 493 miles (793 km) by road east-southeast, and from So Paulo. Pop. (1991 prelim.) 78,123.
